Inspiration and origin

After leaving university I spent much of my time learning photography, and a trip I always wanted to make was to go to Hong Kong. During the summer of 2019 protests erupted in Hong Kong over the extradition bill. Not being able to go I decided to create a diorama of a harbour bar inside Hong Kong. at the time this was my biggest project I had ever done solo.

Software used

  • Unreal Engine 4.22

Unreal was used for housing this project. I originally wanted to create everything myself for this project however in the end as the amount of time spent on the project got larger and larger, I ended up using 3 assets from the quixel megascans library to make sure I got the project done before Christmas.

  • Maya

Maya was used for modeling almost all models you see in this project.

  • Mixer

This was the first project I did where I got to texture the assets as a uni student the job was always given to someone else despite my best efforts. As substance painter cost a large amount of money for fresh university grad, I decided to use mixer, quixels texturing software. at this time the software was in its infancy however the potential of it was still there. i used this software to texture almost all models seen.

  • Photoshop

Photoshop was used to improve some of the textures created in mixer. Mixer was great at creating materials however fine details at the time was not really possible so i used photoshop to fix those textures.

Final version

With all that said, below is the final render of the diorama
