Inspiration and origin

My good friend and colleague Steven Less decided to challenge me to a friendly competition to make the best Japanese garden render with the goal of finishing it within 1 week.

After receiving this challenge, I went to look for inspiration and found it on the japanko_official Instagram page. This Instagram account mainly posts about spots for tourists to visit however they have some great promotional images which I used as inspiration for this challenge.

Software used

  • Unreal Engine 4.26

Unreal was used as the work horse in this project. By using multiple addons i was able to quickly prototype an idea. unreal was used for lighting, white boxing, and general composition. Following a tutorial made by Quixel I was able to procedurally generate snow for the top of the rocks no matter the rotation or scale of the object.

    Addons used

    Brushify - Environment shader

    CHERRY TREE - SAKURA

    Foliage Tree Pack

    Quixel Bridge

  • Blender

Blender was used to model and Uv the low poly building and bridge.

  • Mixer

Mixer was used to texture the building and bridge.

  • Photoshop

Photoshop was used as a final touch up. adding the snow, banner and topped off with a slight colour correction.

Below is the final version
